Guitar and Physics

     Guitar, the most famous and the coolest instrument of this mighty planet called earth, do defintely follow the laws of physics like every other product of this universe. Here I would try to describe how.
     Assuming that the readers have the minimum knowledge about the waves we proceed.

     Waves are of two types,                                                                                                                                 (i) Longitudinal (where particles of medium move parallel to the motion of the wave)   
                                (ii) Transverse (where particles of medium move normal to the motion of the wave)
      Here our consern is with the first kind since sound waves travels in this manner. The second kind is adopted by light and in greater sense electromagnetic waves. There are several more examples of the waves. But lets not go into that.
      Now we come to the concept of superposition of waves.
      When water droplet drops on a reservoir of water we all see waves are created. But if two droplets fall close enough they produce two circular waves which interfere where they meet. That is superposition. You can clearly spot the difference as where they meet they make the waves higher. Actually they also make it lower after certain time but that's harder to notice.
      A guitar has most commonly six strings. When any one of them is struck they vibrate creating sound waves. When another srting is struck it too creates vibration of different frequency. So first we begin by how to tune a guitar.
      Let us assume that we are trying to tune it to EBGDAE mode. So first we tune the 6th string to E with help of a tuner. Now throw the tuner away (don't break it). Now we are own our own. hold the 5th fret of 6th string and strum the 6th string. Simultaneously struck the 5th string in open (i.e. holding no fret on 5th string). Try to match the tune by tightening or loosening the 5th string's screw. When you are close to tuning you will hear strange sounds making it feel like the strength of sound is increasing and decreasing in time to time. If you listen to it carefully and count the number of such increasing strength per second you can know how far you are from tuning it perfectly. This phenomenon is called beats. IT tells you the difference of frequency between the 6th and 5th strings. It occurs due to superposition of waves. If you are eager enough go through some boooks of waves and acoustics. I know I could not explain it in a satisfactory way . But I don't really have any more time to spend on it.
